EDUCATION AND Training

Medstar Ambulance of Mendocino County Inc. (CA EMS CE Provider #49-0026) is proud to offer training courses for healthcare providers and the public through the Medstar Training Center. Scroll down to see current course offerings.

Medstar also partners with schools throughout Northern California to provide paramedic students with a challenging and rewarding field internship opportunity in a unique EMS system. Our experienced preceptors currently accept paramedic interns from Absolute Safety Training Inc., California Fire and Rescue Training Authority, College of the Redwoods, College of the Siskiyous, Napa Valley College, NCTI, Sacramento State University, Santa Rosa Junior College and UEI. To be eligible to participate in the Medstar Paramedic Internship Program, students must successfully complete the didactic and clinical phases of their curriculum.

    HeartCode ACLS is a self-directed, blended learning course (online portion, followed by hands-on session) that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings.

    After registering and paying, students will be e-mailed a unique link within one to three business days (Mon-Fri) to enter the online portion of the course, which consists of a self-assessment followed by a team dynamics lesson and 10 in-hospital patient cases, including a BLS case and two megacode cases. Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the written exam with a score of 84%, then schedule a hands-on practice session with Medstar for full course completion. We are currently scheduling hands-on sessions 3 to 5 business days out.

    Course Duration: The online portion can be completed in 7 hours, depending on the student’s level of experience. The hands-on session can take up to 5 hours.

    HeartCode BLS is a self-directed, blended learning course (online portion, followed by hands-on session) for healthcare professionals seeking an alternative method for completing an initial or renewal BLS course.

    After registering and paying, students will be e-mailed a unique link within one to three business days (Mon-Fri) to enter the online portion of the course, which consists of eSimulations, life-like animations, video scenarios, and knowledge checks. After completing the online portion, students then schedule a hands-on session with Medstar for full course completion. We are currently scheduling hands-on sessions 3 to 5 business days out.

    Course Duration: The online portion can be completed in 1 to 2 hours. The hands-on session can take up to 2 hours, depending on the experience of the student.

    Skills competency verification is available by appointment for BLS CPR and ACLS. Be sure you have completed the online course at OnlineAHA.org prior to requesting skills verification.

    After registering, you can expect contact by e-mail and/or phone within one to three business days to schedule your appointment. We are currently scheduling 3 to 5 business days out. Unless otherwise arranged, skills testing sessions are conducted at the Medstar Training Center located at 960 N State St, Ukiah, CA 95482.

    Course Duration: Up to 2 hours, depending on experience.

    This event is only for payment of internship fees by current paramedic interns. If you are interested in applying for a field internship with Medstar Ambulance, DO NOT submit registration and payment here; instead, follow instructions below.

    Paramedic field internships are available to students of partner schools throughout Northern California, including Absolute Safety Training Inc., California Fire and Rescue Training Authority, College of the Redwoods, College of the Siskiyous, Napa Valley College, NCTI, Sacramento State University, Santa Rosa Junior College and UEI. Eligibility is limited to students who successfully complete the didactic and clinical phases of their curriculum.     Internship Duration: Minimum 480 hours and 40 Advanced Life Support (ALS) contacts (schedule will mirror that of preceptor and generally include one 48-hour shift per week).

    Cost: $1700, split between $850 training fee* payable to Medstar Ambulance of Mendocino County Inc. and $850 payable to paramedic preceptor. Both fees are due at start of internship.

    *100% of Medstar's fee supports our training fund to provide staff and public training, purchase training aids, equipment and supplies.

    The Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor-Led Training is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

    Course Content:

    • Updated science and education from the new 2020 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC
    • High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
    • The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
    • Use of an AED
    • Effective ventilations using a barrier device
    • Importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
    • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

    Course Duration: Approximately 4 hours, including skills practice and skills testing.

    Required Materials: Students are required to bring the current BLS Provider Manual to class. This book is available for purchase through Medstar during the registration process. The AHA also offers this manual as an eBook. Students who purchase the eBook must show it to the instructor on their eReader, laptop or other portable device.
